Alongside choosing curriculum or planning your homeschool year, it’s important to know your destination.  Clear objectives help guide every decision you make. After 23 years of doing this I know that God realy used these times where I took a long hard look at what He wanted us to instil in our kids over the 18 years they spent in our home. I asked the question, “What do I want to have taught them when I hand them that diploma at 18?” So here’s some things to get you started along that track. 

1: Love God

For us as Christian families, the primary goal is to help our children know, love, and glorify God. Education is about more than academics; it’s about pointing them to the Creator and encouraging them to live for His purposes. Our greatest success is seeing our children grow in faith and a desire to honor Him. So this will mean pouring in as much of the Word as you can first thing in the morning and centering the momentum of your family around God’s promises. 

2: Strong Relationships

Homeschooling provides valuable time to build strong family relationships while helping our children grow closer to each other. Everyday conversations, shared experiences, and learning together create lasting memories and deeper family bonds that often matter more than the facts they memorize. My kids share a rare tight bond between all 5 of them that I’m so thankful for. I know they will always have each other’s backs as they enter the adult years together. I believe that if God placed them in our family, and in the order He brought them, then He will use it for good. Learning to get along with all the very different personalities with grace and respect for one another has been something that kept our family tight. 

3: Foster a Love of Learning

Our goal isn’t simply to teach information but to spark curiosity and a lifelong love of learning. When children enjoy discovering new things, education becomes exciting rather than something they have to endure. So if your kid loves to draw, paint, or create, then make sure that they are learning this way. Don’t bore them with busy work of workbooks beyond what is absolutely necessary. Teaching children how to learn is one of the greatest gifts we can give them. A love for reading and learning will continue to benefit them long after homeschool is finished, helping them grow throughout their lives.

4: Prepare Courageous Christians

We want to equip our children with biblical conviction, wisdom, and courage. As they grow, they’ll need to stand firm in their faith, speak truth with grace, and serve Christ faithfully in whatever calling He gives them.

Conclusion

Regularly ask yourself, “What am I really aiming for?” When your goals are clear, decisions about curriculum, schedules, and priorities become much easier. If your aim is to raise children who love God, value relationships, stand for truth, and enjoy learning, you’re giving them far more than an education you’re helping shape their lives.
