“I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the LORD which made heaven and earth.
The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth and even for evermore.”
Ps 121:1,2,8
We are on the move again. Yes, we sold the house! I read this verse this morning and am grateful for its encouragement and comfort. This is all in His grand plan and I am thankful for this new chapter in our lives. Saying goodbye to the friends we made here is so hard, so I will stick with saying- see you again sometime!
So I thought I would put together a little tips and tricks post about how to move and not go nuts. This being our #14th move. Yep, we are nuts.
Start packing early
You can never be too organized for a moving day. Trust me, I have learned the hard way. Pack everything that you will not be used for the last month before your move date. This includes things like books, ornaments, linen closets, etc. The garage should be finished first as it is the best place to store boxes ready for the move. Sort, purge, give away, and then start filling the space with well-labeled boxes that you have packed. This move, we gave away most of our furniture and large construction tools, as they just will not fit in our 28-foot Uhaul truck.
Everything we own that is coming with us is sitting in my garage in this picture. Why am I moving a gazillion apples, pears, and lemons with us? Our local grocery store lets you buy their strong fruit boxes for 25 cents. Also, check out Craigslist or Facebook for free boxes.
Make a moving Box
Another thing I came up with for our frequent moving escapades, is a packing box. This box has pretty much stopped all the, “who’s got the tape, where is the sharpie, where is the shrink wrap”, and the like being screamed across the house. You save so much time by bringing this box from room to room with you during this month of constant packing.
It includes:
packing tape
scissors
shrink wrap
markers
various tools
and the screw gun.
The kids have learned not to mess with my moving box! Also marking the box with its contents and location in the new house helps cut down on the confusion when unloading at the other end. So make sure you think what room the box’s contents will live in at the other end.
Take pictures and bag furniture parts
Taking pictures of all your furniture before you take it apart is also a great idea for when you reach the other side. This especially true for bed frames. Put screws and parts for each item in a small sandwich bag and label each bag, keeping them all together in a shoe box. Do not lose track of this box! Your sleep my depend on it.
Have a VIP Box
At the end of packing up you should have a VIP box – that will include the coffee machine, screw gun, small tool box and the box full of furniture parts. Basically anything you will need the moment you get to your new location. Trust me, at the other end your furniture will be re-assembled a great deal faster if you have wee baggies full of everything you need for that specific piece of furniture. See you all on the other side. I hope the bubble wrap does it’s job !
Happy weekend – Love Kay.
